Beliefs about first lessons

Do teachers' beliefs influence what a teacher does in the classroom? To what extent?

Hello everybody!! I`m the first!

This is the first lesson of Language III I`ve experienced this year at the Teaching Tranining College.

Class: group of 25 adults (between twenty and thirty years old) studying to be teachers of English.

Activity: T gives sts a questionnaire to fill in. The questions are about their level of English, foreign examninations they have sat, subjects they have passed or they owe, their achievements for the subject, interesting activities and topics to develop during the year, etc.

Belief: 1: It is important to know sts` background.

2: A T must know sth about her learners`personal lives to make the class interesting to them.

3: A T cannot teach learners properly unless she knows who they are and what their needs are.

This is the lesson I remember: The teacher makes her students - a group of 10 / 15 teachers to be - seat in a semi circle and tells a funny story about the importance of learning a second language.

Belief: Learning should be fun in order to be motivating

Hello everyone! I always remember my first class of Taller III (nivel inicial y EGB 1 y 2) with Clarisa Remy.

Class: a group of 15 adults from 20 to 30 years old.

Activity: The T makes sts stand up in the front of the classroom. Sts have to say their names together with a gesture that represents themselves, for example, their favourite sport or hobby. Then, all sts have to remember their classmates´ names and gestures and repeat them altogether in a loud voice.

Beliefs:

a) A teacher must know something about her learners´ personal lives to make the class interesting to them.

b) It is difficult and unnatural to work with strangers.

c) A teacher cannot teach learners properly unless she knows who they are and what their needs are.

Aim: Learners introduce themselves, or each other, or learn something about each other.

Class: Group of fourteen eighteen-year-old students at a Secondary School, learning English as a second language.

Activity: T pass a roll of toilet paper and tell stts that theycan get as much as they want. After all of them have taken some, they''l have to give as many pieces of informacion about themselves as the number of 'squares' they took from the paper.

Belief: 1- A teacher cannot teach learners properly unless she knows who they are.

2- Learning should be fun in order to be motivating.

3- It's difficult and unnatural to work with strangers.

Hello everyone!! This is one first lesson I remember delivered by Laura Gieco in Lilnguistics.

Class: Group of 21 year-old students at a Teacher Training College, studying to be teachers of English.

Activity: T writes the word LANGUAGE on the BB with arrows around it and students have to guess the words that are connected to it. While they are saying the words aloud, the T writes them on tbe BB.

Believes:

1. Learners should understand what the course is about to be properly oriented and motivated to learn.

2. T should take profit from sts' previous knowledge.

3. Ss confidence will be increased if they see that they already know many things.

First lesson of Literature 1 (2nd year of the TTC)

Class: Group of approximately 20 students at the Teacher Training Course. The students are between 19 and 25 years old.

Activity: The teacher asks students to read some definitions of literature and then to write down their own definition of literature. Afterwards, everybody shares what they have written and they discuss the matter.

Beliefs:

1- Learners should understand what the course is about to be properly oriented and motivated to learn.

2- Learners' attitudes about the course will be formed quickly, by the end of the first lesson.

Hello!!

I would like to say that I don't think I have ever observed a first lesson but I have experienced a few jeje. This was a first Taller de Docencia III of primary level lesson. It was last year in TTC.

Class: group of around 14 adults (between twenty and twenty eight years old) studying to be teachers of English.

Activity: T makes a performance with little puppets and a magic wand. The teacher showed what the subject will be about or what we are supposed to do when we are teaching. Also, the teacher introduces herself and ask us to introduce ourselves.

Belief:

1: A T cannot teach learners properly unless she knows who they are and what their needs are.

2: It is difficult and unnatural to work with strangers.

3: Learners should understand what the course is about to be properly oriented and motivated.

6: Learners should believe that their teacher is well-qualified and interesting.
